18th December 2009 Open Stage in the Chapel
Always a great friendly laid back acoustic night and a great way to prepare for Christmas.
Another great night with great talents surfacing. It’s great to catch up with all our friends on a night like this.
Merry Christmas one and all!!! And a Happy New Year
November 29th Music @ the Berwick RSL
‘Acoustic Music worth listening to’
We have had some great music at these events – This will be the last one for the year and we hope to do it again next year. Thank you to all of the musicians and groups who supported these events. Giving a little back.
20th November 2009 PJ Style
is four seasoned musicians They play their own compositions of foot-tapping, heartfelt songs of lost, unrequited or unfulfilled love, inspired by real experiences: the drought, mid-life changes, road trips, falling in and out of love and dead rock stars…and they all feel their best in their PJs.
Peter ”PJ “ McErlain fills the stage with virtuoso keyboard, mouth harp, saxophone playing and fine vocals. He writes, he plays and he sings form the heart.
Jon “JP” Paton is the very cool, very urbane lead guitar with the slow hand style that travels from country, to blues to rock and ballads with ease…he is that cat in the hat.
Phil “P “ Childs likes nothing better than belting out and writing big PJ Style numbers and getting close and personal with fine country rock ballads while stroking out blistering rhythms on his guitar.
Jon “J” Boot keeps the band together with his beautiful bass playing and back up vocals and writes the songs that take us into dark and mysterious places. 2 Ps 2 Js…that’s PJ Style
Support act was K’Crasher – Definitely the best voice and entertainer I have heard in a long time – Keep an eye out and catch up with her if you are able.
16th October 2009 Phil Garland
Phil Garland is a highly respected folksinger-songwriter and entertainer from New Zealand. He has spent a lifetime researching, collecting, writing and performing, during which time he has often been described as A National Living Treasure and New Zealand’s foremost and finest heritage balladeer.
Germany & Switzerland, Phil Garland has performed extensively around the world promoting the Kiwi musical heritage with a blended presentation of songs, ballads, stories and yarns that introduce audiences to the musical heart of New Zealand and its people. Phil’s entertaining performance prompted one American reviewer to say:- “his songs transport you to New Zealand so effectively, you may be inspired to take up residence there!”
All of the above is true.
And
Fat Chance and the Blue Grass Playboys
We cover a lot of musical genres with examples like The Monkees, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Paul Kelly, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Dr Hook, Stealers Wheel and Elvis just to name a handful!! Rolf is an seasoned muso and can turn his hand to most instruments, so you never know what he might play next! Monty plays and makes fantastic mandolins, guitars and ukulele’s and will custom make instruments if you ask him nicely!! Snuffles is a lead guitarist in a banjo players body, and frequently has flash backs to the 70’s! Jet and his wife write some original songs that he makes the rest of the band play along on… All this makes for interesting gigs – have a look at what is coming up!

And a great night it was.

21st August 2009 Suzette Herft
Suzette is a contemporary troubadour and songwriter whose roots are in the American Folk tradition. She has often been described as the “Australian Joan Baez”, with her dark features and her rich, honeyed voice. This troubadour will impress you with her blend of country soul with contemporary, original and traditional folk ballads. Suzette has 3 albums to her credit – “Never too Late” ; ” A Place to call Home” and her new release “Both Sides Now”. A magic voice – see her if you get the chance.
And
Hayward Williams (on tour from the USA)
Williams grew up with a guitar in his hands, performing from an early age in cafés, bars, and eventually rock clubs throughout his home state of Wisconsin and around the Midwest. He hit the ground running with a ’64 Gibson that his mother bought at a garage sale, listened hard to everything from the Beatles to Buckley, and somewhere along the way began to write the tunes that would become his own voice. His live shows have been described as having “…everything you could hope for… message, melody, and hooks”
The skinny kid from Wyoming put on a great show and sounded better than his CD (I think).
Khe Sanh Rat and Lisa Dean Gratitude Award.
Went to Rudy for a great first time ever performance.

A quiet night but with enough talent for a good show.
15th May 2009 Bruce Mathiske (with Friends) WORLD ACCLAIMED GUITAR VIRTUOSO
Between them over 150 years playing time, Rob Johnstone, Mike Johnstone and Bruce Mathiske create sheer guitar magic that make this group a stringed sensation. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Chet Atkins & Django Reinhardt, their music ranges from Gypsy Jazz, swing to Mediterranean as well as their own compositions. All played with a sincerity & honesty rarely heard from a collaboration of guitarists. Add the bluesy vocal inflections of Rob Johnstone and you have the perfect recipe of music to your palette.
The description is not wrong – Catch up with them at some time and be amazed. It was a booked out event – Keh Shan Vouchers and wine and fruit and a panda in the raffle. A great night. Thanks to Berwick Fresh for the donation of the fruit basket.

The Age describes Nick as “Australia’s virtuoso of acoustic roots and blues” while Australian Guitar Magazine calls him “an awesome talent !”

20th February 2009 BiG Folk
at Bad Folk And….. check out: www.frankjones.com.au played original songs with that Melbourne urban/folk/roots sound we’ve all come to love (pioneered, in part, by members of this band through the 90’s and 2000s). BiG FOLK combines the great writing talents of one of Australia’s favourite songwriters, Frank Jones (ex-Whirling Furphies frontman), with an amazingly talented band of musicians lead by George Butrumlis (Zydeco Jump frontman), and including Howard Cairns on upright bass and Dennis Close on drums. Top this off with the sensational Rosies (Rosie Wositzky-Jones and Rosie Hilder), singing up a harmony vocals storm, and you have the fabulous BiG FOLK

21st November 2008 Paul Wookey

Over many years he has honed these skills and toured extensively throughout Australia with occasional international forays.

17th October 2008 8 BALL AITKEN
8 Ball Aitken performs uniquely Far North Queenslandic country anthems — contemporary honk, stomp, Aussie swamp tunes. This is a big sound from the deep north, straight out of the Mareeba Delta, all steamy and bouncing off the remnants of extinct volcanoes, booming through the canefields. 8 Ball rolls into your personal soundtrack, packing cowboy music from the roadside, roots music with balls.
I was not there but am reliably told it was a night not to be missed.
Support Act Tim Hannan and Jan Dandridge. Wish I was there!!!
Khe Sanh Rat Gratitude Award.

15th August 2008 Horny Toads
The Horny Toads describe themselves as a “western string band”, a not-so-subtle blend of country, bluegrass and old time with a healthy amount of lip-service to rock and pop music. They say, “We take songs from the 1920s through to the 90s and make them all sound the same!” (Editor’s note: That isn’t true. But they DO make them all sound pretty darned good!)
Khe Sanh Rat Gratitude Award.

Open stage was limited with a support act Silver Reasons, being included in the line up for the night. Silver Reasons were magnificent. Great vocals and harmonies with everyone singing along. And just when you thought you had your monies worth, Mike and Bill hit the stage. It seems that nights with a bit of a country flavor are the way to go. We had a really busy night with a couple of spot acts to get the show rolling followed by our own (we claim her) with some of Mommas Mountain Jug Band backing her. I think Jan brought along every one she had ever met!!
